Doris Included in Irish Team But McCarthy Left Out
Returning manager the Ireland coach has included skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn internationals, however lock McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be fit to face New Zealand in the US on 1 November.
Lock Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the first Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Ulster forward Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are not included because of injury, and full-back Keenan had already been ruled out after having a hip operation following the Lions tour.
Dublin province forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-man group, however Irish rugby authorities states new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Bolton will travel to the US as "reserves".
Following facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous encounter, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a mostly familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again compete for the first-choice number 10 spot. The fly-half role is remains up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's URC game at Croke Park.
Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen with Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a return for Connacht's Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, but the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at full-back.
Wingers Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.
Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has been in two of Leinster's three league matches this season and featured in Ireland A's loss by the English in Bristol previously.
The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a international appearance.
Munster lock Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, and veteran Northern province lock Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to deputise for the captain should the captain does not regain fitness in time to face New Zealand.
The national team will assemble in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on the following day.
