Ex- FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and impeding a legislative process.

Mr Comey's attorney submitted the response on his behalf in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

The defense lawyer announced he would attempt to have the case terminated for several causes including that his client, a critic of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

James Comey was charged just days after Trump pushed his chief prosecutor to take action against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald advised the court they intended to file several motions to terminate the proceedings before a trial, arguing the legal action was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully designated to handle the proceedings.

James Comey's proceedings was initially handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under pressure from Donald Trump after his examination into a different rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to file indictments.

Courtroom Atmosphere

Mr Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration terminated.

Following the reading to the magistrate state his rights and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, James Comey was questioned if he comprehended the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he informed the judge.

Background Context

The former director was the FBI Director from four years and was fired about a few months into the former president's initial presidency as president. At the period, Mr Comey was leading an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the election effort.

While in office, James Comey caused a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he declared just shortly prior to the national vote that he was probing presidential nominee the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against Clinton were never brought, leading to criticism from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys assert the former director gave untrue statements to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he misled the upper house by saying he had not authorized an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities information about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also allege James Comey of "improperly attempting to sway, block and slow" the committee by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

Through a recording Mr Comey published to his social media after he was charged, he declared he was innocent and alleged the former president of acting like a "tyrant".

"We have known for considerable time that there are costs to opposing Donald Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

The accusations against James Comey came after Donald Trump shared on digital channels calling for his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, charge Mr Comey and others.
