Major Online Failure Impacts Dozens Online Platforms and Applications

An extensive internet outage has impacted many websites and apps worldwide, as users experiencing issues accessing the internet after problems at Amazon’s online infrastructure system.

The affected platforms include the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to several Amazon-owned services like its primary shopping site and the Ring doorbell company.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was affected along with its affiliates Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with additional accounts of difficulties using the HM Revenue and Customs site on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring customers took to online platforms to report their home gadgets were failing.

In the UK alone, reports of issues on specific applications ran into the many thousands for each app.

Amazon reported that the issue began in the east coast of the America at AWS, a section that offers crucial web backbone for many firms, who utilize space on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the world’s largest web hosting service.

Shortly after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), Amazon confirmed “increased error rates and latencies” for AWS services in a area on the east coast of the America. The widespread consequence appeared to hit platforms worldwide, and the problem monitoring service reporting problems with the same sites in multiple continents.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on online failures, also reported a surge in issues on Monday morning, and numerous instances found in the state of Virginia, the location of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the issues originated.
